Environmental Defense Fund’s Innovation Review: Big Eco Ideas From Big Business

schwarzenegger_yarnold_248x248.jpgEcoprenuerist exist in small companies and large as they spearhead efforts to make the world a greener place. The Environmental Defense Fund in their first Innovations Review, subtitled, “Making green the new business as usual” makes just that point.

Environmental sustainability is no longer the purview of boutique eco-brands. And it is no longer just about compliance with regulations or securing positive press coverage. It’s about driving cost savings through efficiencies, creating new markets and securing competitive advantage. Smart companies realize that what is good for the environment is also good for business.

At the launch, attended by California governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, the EDF called attention to the moves made by big companies toward saving the environment.

Some of the greenest innovations in the business world are being made by large companies with the muscle and clout to create change in a large swath of the business community. The EDF’s Innovation Review reveals some of the best and most promising new trends in going green and hopes to provide inspiration for a wide range of entrepreneurs as well as “intrapreneurs” (those charged with innovation within large companies).

Broken down into a variety of categories, the review notes products and processes which have and can make a difference to both environmental health and corporate profitability. Examples include simple steps like installing solar panels and promoting carpooling and large scale telecommuting programs… which have cost and energy savings, as well as, morale boosting benefits.

More thought provoking are the newer, more innovative programs like:

Insuring through green building insurance companies that recognize the reduced risk and superior quality of green buildings.

Reducing the weight and materials of both packaging AND products resulting in not only less weight but also, lower shipping costs, less inventory space and greater profit per square foot for retailers.

Because addressing environmental issues after the fact can be costly, integrating green into the design phase enables companies to not only cut costs but also enhance the brand and gain a competitive advantage upon launch.

A new bright spot in the eco world, the Innovations Report addresses issues faced by both large and small companies and works toward taking green mainstream. Something we can all be happy about wherever we strive to save the environment.

  1. Dear Ecopreneurist,
Your opinion would be greatly appreciated on this very BIG idea.

If the millions of ECO KIDS around the world could somehow be brought together as a world organization, the positive environmental results could be real and awesome. ECO KIDS, same in name, different in ways, but all trying to help make their world a safer, cleaner and healthier place. Given their numbers the world’s ECO KIDS working together would be well worth thinking about. World ECO KIDS support and participate in the Earth Day celebrations along with millions of other people in over 170 countries; that should say something about possibilities (in any language). There can be no greater need or deed than saving the earth.
