I also run a similar service to HARO called findasource.org (sorry for the plug) :)

Our system actually matches the media requests to certain experts categorically which makes it a more targeted response. For example in this case, the request wouldn't have been sent to all of HARO's experts, but only those in the 'general' list. It makes it harder for experts to filter through a whole bunch of noise before they actually provide you relevant information. We are adding and subtracting categories to fine tune our expert list in an attempt to get the best results for reporters. However, we are still building our expert list and will begin accepting media requests (hopefully) within the near future.

I also agree with about psychologically pushing the idea of green second. Stick to the core service or product first and then wrap it in the eco-friendly or green blanket second. I remember starring at that core service diagram in my marketing 101 class with all the benefits/features/value-added/warranties surrounding the core service...it was just too old to add 'green' to that list :)

As a marketing and business consultant to the "green" sector, I absolutely agree with your advice. I always try to get my clients to focus first on the extreme value of their product/service and their authentic and sustainable business practices. These are the core things that make a business of ANY kind successful and prosperous.

Good advice! For more examples on positioning green on mainstream, consumer-sought benefits, check out this article my colleagues and I published a few years ago:
