Hi Ryan,

What a thought provoking piece!
I would modestly admit to being one of the "people have experienced a shift in their personal motivation as a result of a life changing experience - and for me one "Aha" moment was studying as a student in Thailand and travelling through poverty stricken SE Asia..

I strongly believe that corporations and SMEs have a massive potential to be the leaders of a sustainable green economy.. but this is not just an operational change it will need to be a social change - and a willingness of individuals to engage and no longer be passive consumers. These "hybrid individuals" as John Elkington defines are the catalysts for change in their circle of influence - whether that be amongst friends, their community or in the workplace.

They have achieved transition into action through open mindedness to new ways of thinking, seeing and doing by valuing fundamentally that there needs to be balance in the economic, social and environmental! Measuring and monitoring is the first step to change in business.. but changing habits and behaviours of individuals will be the biggest challenge.

Living passionately,

Excellent post. Maybe Johan de Nysschen of Audi, who was just featured in GO, should explore the idea of being purpose driven in a good sense before he shoots off his mouth about a technology that is here to stay. Diesel is dirty, and old, Johan, and your vision is backward, not forward. Diesel, in a nicely engineered vehicle, is better than gasoline, but it's still a very dirty hydrocarbon. Engineering and tweaking old technology will work for a while, but then one needs to move on. Johan really does fit the description of the disconnected corporatist. Oh, and please, a representative of a German company complaining about the government getting involved to help a certain technology! He's scared to death that his backward vision will be undone by new technology. And...it will be.
