Green & Sustainable Business Ventures: For Entrepreneurs & Investors
Thousands of poor homes in Manila have a problem, not uncommon for cramped and small settlements. These houses are so close together, with metal roofing that all the light is blocked off and no light reaches the homes even during daylight!
The solar bottle bulb, an innovation developed by students of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, inspired by the Appropriate Technologies Collaborative, is helping poor communities in developing countries like Brazil and Philippines through simple and appropriate innovation.
What is the Solar Light Bulb?
It is a simple bottle bulb, usually a 1 liter soda bottle that is filled with a solution of purified water and bleach. The bottle is inserted halfway through a hole drilled in the metal roof and its sides are sealed. The whole deal looks like a bulb through a sunroof and provides a good amount of light by deflecting sunlight into gloomy interiors.
Eco-friendly parents who cringe every time they use a throw-away diaper can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel. At least British parents. The first diaper recycling plant opened in UK yesterday.
The facility, which will also recycle feminine hygiene and adult incontinence products, is the first of five planned over four years by Knowaste, an organization which specialises in absorbent hygiene product waste recycling.
Knowaste’s recycling process is the world’s first, environmentally friendly, and cost effective solution to meeting the global challenge of disposing Absorbent Hygiene Products (AHPs): nappies, adult incontinence and feminine hygiene products.
What can happen in a day?
A lot, says Al Gore. Catastraphic storms, forest fires, landslides and more. But what can also happen is a ‘Climate Reality Project’, (CRP, formerly Alliance for Climate Protection) that can bring the facts about the climate crisis into the mainstream and engage the public in conversation about how to solve it. This project is Al Gore’s latest global campaign to bring the reality of the climate crisis back into focus.
The Cleanweb Hackathon concluded last night with 14 teams taking center-stage to showcase mobile and web apps that could help us, in their own small ways, manage resources more efficiently. The teams worked through the weekend and developed some “awesome” that creator Sunil Paul, pointed out as one of the most important features of cleanweb. How do you identify “cleanweb”? Acording to Sunil, it will demonstrate-
#1 Extensive use of information technology (duh)
#2 Makes things more efficient; allows better use of resources
#3 Makes life more AWESOME!
That’s exactly what the teams set out to do. Developers, designers, and business folks collaborating on building apps as diverse as ones that bring together backyard urban farmers (GROmunity) or a green life cycle analysis tool that small businesses and artisans can use to analyse and put on their green products (Greenly).
