Planet People Announces Finalists for the “Who cares about this Planet?” Challenge: Voting begins today, to determine the winner of up to $5000 in funding.

Planet People, the manufacturer of eco-cleaning products including iQ – The Smarter Cleaner, announced the 5 finalists for its Who cares about this Planet?” Challenge. The challenge revolved around motivating individuals and groups to submit innovative green projects for a chance to win up to $5000 in funding. Entries were reviewed by an Advisory Committee consisting of leaders in the environmental sector, including the CEO of Green Living, eco-journalists from Mother Nature Network and Homemakers, and a representative from Planet People.

The Finalists

After carefully reviewing the entries, the advisory committee has selected the following submissions as the top 5 finalists (in no particular order):

  • Spring Harbor Middle School Greenhouse Project, Madison, WI : Spring Harbor Middle School has an environmental science based curriculum and needs your help to build a greenhouse that they hope will become a community produce garden in the future. They plan to building a sustainable greenhouse constructed entirely of recycled/reclaimed materials.
  • Boat Clean – Changing the culture of Boating , Toronto, ON : Boat Clean program – focuses on reducing boats and outboard engine emissions —a major contributor to drinking water pollution and nature contamination. It will help boaters in Ontario be environmentally conscious about the way they maintain and drive boats.
  • Ecosphere Fitness Center, San Jose, CA : EcoSphere will use solar, kinetic energy flooring, energy capturing Cardio Equipment, & other energy production/conservation technologies to introduce the 1st sustainable, eco-friendly gym & business. Additionally, it will incorporate a holistic approach to balance a complete well-being lifestyle by providing nutritional counseling, post physical therapy, reflexology, massage, acupressure, yoga and mediation.
  • Quinzee – Making Home Energy Use Relevant, Toronto, ON : Quinzee is a mobile application that provides relevant, personalized and social information on energy use to consumers. Quinzee empowers energy consumers by helping them understand their bill and usage better and compare their use against those with similar lifestyles. It wants to help consumers understand simple changes that can positively impact their bills and the environment.
  • Saving the Planet at Work, Brampton, ON: This project plans to bring eco-effectiveness to the work place in the form of green office practices and rewarding the most effective employees through perks like premium parking and other prizes. Their plans also include setting up a car-pooling board.
Your Vote Counts!

In the next and final phase of the challenge, voting is now open to the public to select the winner, with every vote contributing to a dollar raised for the winning project. You can support the submissions by voting for the entry you believe is the most innovative and sustainable. Only one vote per person permitted. Voting begins today, Tuesday December 13, 2011 at 12:00 pm and ends Wednesday January 11, 2012 at 12:00 pm. Winners will be announced on January 12, 2012.  The finalist with the highest number of votes will receive the Grand Prize.

More About the “Who cares about this Planet?” Challenge

The “Who cares about this Planet?” Challenge follows the company’s 2011 launch of iQ, a new line of eco-friendly household cleaning products that questioned conventional cleaning, and features an innovative new packaging system that reduces plastic waste by over 80%.

To support the “Who cares about this Planet?” challenge, Planet People worked with  a Toronto based and emerging Spoken Word artist, Made Wade and Creative Studio, Eighteen Eighty to create a thought-provoking short film that encourages viewers to question their own commitment to the planet.
