Government and Financial Services Lag in Sustainability Engagement, Small Businesses Shine: Brighter Planet Survey

Shareholder pressure and greater demands for corporate accountability are the fastest growing catalysts for greener workplaces, according to a new survey released today by Brighter Planet, a provider of carbon and energy calculations. Demands for corporate and social accountability are at an all-time high. Many organizations are floundering in their efforts to promote sustainability. Financial services, government and wholesale sectors are the laggards in sustainability engagement, while environmental, energy, utility, and non-profit organizations get the highest ratings for program effectiveness. Smaller organizations tend to outperform larger ones.

“One uses a plastic tasting spoon for a few seconds. It then continues to exist on this planet for hundreds or thousands of years. Considering we use millions of these things, in addition to other types of single-use plastic, it’s not sustainable or responsible. How will the next generations, namely, our children, look back at us and what we’ve left for them?”

Newsweek Names IBM – America’s Greenest Company

In its third annual Green Rankings, Newsweek has identified IBM as America’s greenest company. Newsweek partnered with two research organizations, Trucost and Sustainalytics, to analyze how companies interact with the environment. They took into account each company’s actual environmental footprint, including greenhouse gas emissions and water use; each company’s policies regarding environmental programs and initiatives; and each company’s disclosure or reporting.
