New Mexico's Cleantech City of the Future: Testing Ground for Next-Gen Technologies
Anyone visiting New Mexico’s Chihuahuan Desert in the near future will think that they are seeing a mirage, but it’s not! There is an entire experimental city being built there to test, evaluate, and commercialize next-generation technologies. The purpose of this Center for Innovation, Testing & Evaluation (CITE) project is to learn how next-gen technologies can best benefit city structure and infrastructure.
Modeled on a medium-sized American city of about 35,000 people, the project will have a city center, suburbs, rural areas, strip malls, along with all the infrastructure of the roads, highways, transmission and telecommunications lines, and water and sewage distribution systems – all vacant.
This experiment is no pie-in-the-sky fantasy: Pegasus Global Holdings has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with New Mexico’s Department of Economic Development. It has the full support of the governor and is expected to break ground in June.
A Unique Opportunity to Test Next-Gen Technologies
Pegasus is an international technology development firm. It will own and finance the cleantech city at a cost of over $1 billion. Paying customers for the project are being given a unique opportunity. They will be able to test and evaluate cleantech projects in a setting which simulates real-world conditions. So the site will become a live laboratory to validate technologies in a city setting.
Some of the technologies proposed for testing are:
- Renewable Energy Generation
- Smart Transportation Systems
- Telecommunications Projects
- Smart Grid Technologies
- Development of Resources (such as desalinization)
Pegasus sees this an ideal proving ground for technologies arising from the federal labs, not-for-profit technology centers, federal agencies and departments, universities, and the private sector. It is being designed to provide detailed measurable results on the economic impacts of cleantech on sectors such as energy, telecommunications, transportation, agriculture, and security.
CITE will be a catalyst for the acceleration of research into applied, market-ready products by providing “end to end” testing and evaluation of emerging technologies and innovations from the world’s public laboratories, universities and the private sector.
For example, in the area of Renewable Energy the CITE project will provide numerous opportunities to drill down into the costs of introducing solar, wind, and Smart Grid technologies in a real world setting. In the area of wireless infrastructure, satellite and terrestrial wireless will serve CITE. This will permit the development, installation, testing, and commercialization of high-speed broadband technologies across all sectors of the economy (energy, transportation, and security) as well as to underserved communities.
So, no, it’s not a mirage. . . . it is the CITE project for Cleantech testing and development.
